Equestrian Training Programme
The Equestrian Training Programme is a three year FAS funded vocational programme which aims to equip learners, whose needs have not been met by mainstream services, with the necessary skills and knowledge to progress to either working in the equestrian industry or onto further studies.
This is a three year full time programme taught by three facilitators – Helen Keogh, Yasmin Fortune and Becky Lee, and is based in our campus in Bray, Co. Wicklow.
As part of the Equestrian Training Programme trainees will learn about:
• Handling horses in a safe way; long-lining, horsemanship and basic training
• Daily stable and yard tasks
• Caring for horses, horse welfare and feeding
• How horses behave and why
• The equipment used when working with and riding horses
• How to work as part of a team and communicate with others
• The skills necessary to ride competently
Throughout the programme trainees have an opportunity to gain an understanding of the equestrian industry and complete work experience placements in a variety of equestrian settings.
Festina Lente are committed to providing training in a person centred manner and in addition to vocational skills that are learnt, each trainee’s personal development needs are incorporated into an individual training plan. Development of areas such as self-esteem, communication, reading and writing skills, team-work, personal responsibility, self advocacy and management are supported as part of the programme.
Trainees who complete the programme will receive a FETAC level 4 certificate in Stable & Yard Routine, Sports Horse Riding, Communications and Work Experience. Trainees also have an opportunity to obtain a British Horse Society qualification if they wish to do so. Full support from the programme team is given to help trainees to decide how they would like to progress on completion of the programme.
